Sufjan Stevens - “For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherles in Ypsilanti”
Okay everyone. It’s time to say goodbye. Thank you all for (possibly) reading me ramble on about my dear friend Suf, and thank you Hendrik for giving me the space and opportunity to do it.
If you don’t like Sufjan, you probably weren’t even paying attention, but if you for some reason did, I hope I at least got you to consider why the people who love him tend to do it so sincerely.
That up there is the best video of Sufjan Stevens to exist anywhere. It is a little silly and posed, obviously, with the hat and the background and the fence-sitting. But it is also a man alone with a banjo singing “I’d do anything for you,” and then singing “I did everything for you,” lyrics that are vague and not contextualized much at all by the rest of the song around them. But they feel elemental, those two lines, and the song sticks with you.
That is what Sufjan is so good at: sticking with you.
